World Environment Day – June 5
Tomorrow (June 5, 2018) is World Environment Day and one of the very first resources that comes to mind is water. We need water for so many things: good drinking water to keep our bodies healthy, plenty of water to help our crops and gardens grow, water safe enough to play and swim when summer heat arrives, and much more.
At the Library, we are glad to announce that providing good drinking water is a major component of our current Sustainable Living grant project, funded by Friends of the Lindsborg Library, McPherson County Community Foundation, and Smoky Valley Community Foundation. As you may have noticed on previous visits to the Library, our water fountain needed to be replaced. The basin was no longer able to be cleaned and the water pressure was not easily controlled. That has now changed.
We knew we needed a new water fountain so the Library could provide drinking water to our patrons. Thinking of our we could do our part to choose more environmentally friendly options, we decided on a model with a bottle filler. This eliminates the need for single use plastic bottles (which we had been using), reducing our demand for plastic while still providing plenty of good drinking water.
As part of our grant, more resources have been added about Sustainable Living choices. What simple change could you do that makes your choices a bit more environmentally friendly? Need ideas on better water conservation for your garden? How to move towards having a waste free kitchen? How reducing, reusing, and recycling could actually work in your house? Books giving examples of everyday choices that you might find useful are now added and ready for you to check out to see if they might have ideas that work in your home.
This World Environment Day, the Library is celebrating having good drinking water and our new ability to reduce plastic by bringing our travel cups instead of single use water bottles. How might you participate?
