Celebrate 60: Writing Contest

We are celebrating our 60th Birthday! The Lindsborg Community Library first opened our doors on June 2, 1960 as a summer reading program for children and we plan to hold our 60th birthday party on August 1, 2020 at the end of this year’s summer reading program. As part of our celebrations, we are creating a commemorative booklet that includes Library history and photographs along with book reviews, stories, and poems from Library patrons like you!

Winning submissions to our writing contest will be included in our booklet and all submissions will be posted at the Library to share with our community. All ages of adults, teens, and children are invited to submit in the following categories: book review, poem, short story, and short essay. Very short submissions by our youngest writers are welcome. Winners will receive a free copy of the published booklet at our Library’s 60th Birthday Party on August 1, 2020. Additional copies will be available for purchase.

Submission Requirements: Submissions in all categories should be inspired by libraries, books, or reading. Submissions may feature the Lindsborg Community Library or the writer’s lifelong experience with libraries in general.

Book Review: Write a review of 100 words or less one of your favorite books. All book reviews are welcome; we are especially interested in reviews of our Top 10 Lindsborg 150 Books: The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, the Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander, the Chronicles of Narnia Series by C.S. Lewis, the Little House on the Prairie Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein, the Inheritance Cycle series by Christopher Paolini, and the Secrets of Droon series by Tony Abbott.

Poem: Write a poem of 100 words or less. Poetry can have a set structure (such as haiku: 3 lines long, 1st line 5 syllables, 2nd line 7 syllables, 3rd line 5 syllables) or free verse. Rhyming lines are welcome but not required.

Short Story:  Use your creativity to craft a short story of 200-750 words. Short stories may be inspired by true events or completely products of your imagination.

Short Essay: Craft a short essay of 200-750 words. Articles in this category can be history, memoir, or opinion pieces.

Please submit your work typed or printed legibly along with your name and, if younger than 18, your age. To be considered for publication in the Library’s 60th Birthday Commemorative Booklet, submissions must be turned into the Library by Wednesday, July 1, 2020.

We look forward to reading and posting your work!

Library Summer Music Begins!

We are excited to announce that this year’s Summer Reading Program will include Library Summer Music, sponsored by the Lindsborg Arts Council! Two concerts and two workshops will be presented as part of this series which starts with Thad Beach & The Musical Chair on Saturday, June 2nd at 1:30 PM at the Library.

It’s time to “Rock Your Imagination” as musician and songwriter Thad Beach transforms a common wooden chair into a musical accompaniment to his original creations and traditional songs. His concerts provide lots of opportunities to participate and he demonstrates a variety of musical instruments. Thad draws from a diverse background in musical styles ranging from traditional, folk, old-time, and country blues to roaring 20’s. His programs feature a variety of string and percussion instruments. Lots of fun for all ages!

In addition to performing, Thad works with children in the schools each year as a teaching artist for preschool through high school, developing and presenting programs on curriculum-related topics. He also devotes time to preserving the history, heritage and cultural aspects of rural areas through song by conducting week-long songwriting residencies for elementary, middle and high schools.

Thad grew up in Ohio, has lived both on the coast and in the mountains of North Carolina and is currently at home in Salina, Kansas. He can be reached through his website at ThadBeachMusic.com.
